Hungary prepares for potentially the worst floods in 10 years

Hungary remains on high alert as Storm Boris continues to head south, posing a risk of flooding. Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has warned that the city could face the biggest flood of the decade, with Danube water levels expected to crest at 8.5 metres. Flood defence measures have been implemented along 540 kilometres of Hungary’s rivers, with a third-degree alert in place along 200 kilometres as stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He has also approved the opening of an emergency reservoir along the Leitha river. Traffic restrictions have been put in place as a preventative measure, impacting areas such as the Gyor-Moson-Sopron and Komárom-Esztergom counties bordering the Danube, as well as the Danube bend area. International train services between Hungary and Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany are expected to be affected. The Hungarian government is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to protect the citizens and infrastructure of the country. Residents are advised to stay informed about updates and follow any instructions from authorities to ensure their safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
