Following Leads in Eric Adams’s Circle of Influence

New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his administration are under scrutiny by federal corruption investigations. Several high-ranking officials in his administration have had their homes searched and devices seized, but no charges have been filed. The investigations are being conducted by the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, with the Department of Investigation involved as well.

One investigation is focused on whether Adams’ 2021 campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations. Brianna Suggs, former chief fund-raiser, and Rana Abbasova, an aide in the mayor’s international affairs office, are cooperating with the inquiry. Another investigation involves Edward A. Caban, the former police commissioner, and his brother James Caban, a former police officer, who are being investigated for a nightclub-security business.

Additionally, a possible bribery scheme involving a government-relations consulting company run by Terence Banks, a senior City Hall aide and brother of two other high-ranking officials, is also under investigation. Phones of top City Hall aides, including Philip Banks III, deputy mayor for public safety, and David C. Banks, schools chancellor, were seized by federal agents.

Other legal matters involve former campaign fund-raiser Winnie Greco, former buildings commissioner Eric Ulrich, and former police inspector Dwayne Montgomery, who have faced charges related to bribery and campaign donations.

Mayor Adams is also facing personal legal troubles, with a lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault from 1993. Mayor Adams has denied the accusation, and investigations into these legal matters continue.
