In a recent interview with WMAR-2 News, political science experts Ian Anson and David Karol discussed the impact of President Biden dropping out of the 2024 race. Anson highlighted the minimal effects model in politics, suggesting that entrenched opinions about Democrats and Republicans may not easily change, but Biden’s absence could potentially sway undecided voters. Karol pointed out that Vice President Kamala Harris, as a newer face, may have more upside compared to Biden. Historically, dropping out late in the game has not boded well for Democratic chances in November, as seen with Truman and Johnson. However, top Democrats are rallying behind Harris as their nominee, unlike the lack of unity in 1968. Both experts believe another high-profile Democrat entering the race is unlikely, given the support for Harris. They also clarified that there should be no legal or logistical issues with printing Harris’ name on the ballot. Karol speculated that the absence of Biden, who Trump was prepared to run against, may affect Trump’s campaign. Despite potential challenges, Anson assured that states can proceed with printing ballots with Harris’ name since she has not been officially nominated. The experts emphasized the uniqueness of the current situation and the need for party unity behind Harris.
