Maryland Transportation Authority and State Highway Administration have received federal environmental approvals for the reconstruction of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. The Federal Highway Administration approved the project, stating that the new bridge will not significantly impact the community, natural resources, or cultural resources. The MDTA announced that the project will have positive impacts by restoring a critical link in the interstate system. It is expected that the project will not affect planned growth or land use in the area, cause relocations, or impact travel patterns from pre-collapse conditions. The MDTA will engage with the community as the planning and design process progresses.
Proposals are due for a $75 million general engineering consultant contract, and the consultant will serve as MDTA’s engineering representative. The contract is expected to be awarded in February 2025. The MDTA is committed to ensuring that the community is involved in the future of the bridge reconstruction. The approval of the project marks a significant step towards the rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and is expected to have a positive impact on the transportation infrastructure in the area.
