British preacher Anjem Choudary found guilty of leading an Islamic terrorist organization

Radical British preacher Anjem Choudary was found guilty by a London jury of directing a terrorist group, ALM, which was outlawed in 2010 for promoting terrorism. Choudary stepped in to lead ALM after its founder, Omar Bakri Muhammad, was imprisoned in Lebanon. Choudary denied promoting ALM, but prosecutors argued that he had a significant radicalizing impact on individuals who went on to commit terrorist acts.

Choudary previously supported the Islamic State group and has spoken to groups like the Islamic Thinkers Society in New York, which was ALM’s U.S. branch. Choudary was convicted alongside one of his followers, Khaled Hussein, who was also a dedicated supporter of the group. Hussein, a 29-year-old from Edmonton, Canada, was found guilty of membership in a proscribed organization.

New York Police Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner called the case historic, as it is rare for leaders of terrorist groups to be brought to justice. The case highlights the significant impact that radical figures like Choudary can have on individuals who go on to commit terrorist acts.

Choudary and Hussein were arrested after Hussein landed at Heathrow Airport. They are scheduled to be sentenced on July 30. The conviction of Choudary and Hussein demonstrates the British government’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for their involvement in promoting and supporting extremist ideologies and organizations.
