Australia is currently facing an egg supply shortage due to outbreaks of Avian influenza, which has resulted in the euthanization of around 1 million affected hens. As a result, McDonald’s has announced a temporary cutback in breakfast hours by 90 minutes across Australia, serving breakfast only until 10:30 a.m. instead of midday. Supermarkets such as Coles and Woolworths have also imposed restrictions on the number of egg cartons consumers can purchase.
The Australian government has assured consumers that there is no impact on chicken meat supply, and efforts are being made to redirect supplies to areas experiencing the greatest shortages. The government is currently responding to outbreaks of the H7 high pathogenicity avian influenza at 11 poultry farms.
Despite the challenges in the poultry industry, consumers are being reassured by industry group Australian Eggs that there are still over 20 million hens under the care of farmers working to ensure there are eggs on shelves. Food Standards Australia New Zealand has stated that properly prepared chicken meat, eggs, and egg products are safe to eat and there is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted through food.
Overall, the impact of avian influenza in Australia is being felt in the poultry industry, but efforts are being made to address the challenges and ensure a stable egg supply for consumers.
