Pittsburgh police are investigating a hoax bomb threat made to the Tree of Life synagogue, which was the site of a deadly attack in 2018. The threat, sent via email, was quickly determined to be false. The perpetrator of the 2018 attack, Robert Bowers, was found guilty of 63 counts including hate crimes and sentenced to death. Authorities have not linked the recent threat to the previous shooting. The Anti-Defamation League reported a significant increase in antisemitic bomb threats in 2023, with over 1,000 threats compared to only 91 in 2022. The surge in threats is attributed in part to tensions following attacks by Hamas in Israel. Police are urging people to remain vigilant, as threats against synagogues and other Jewish institutions continue to be a concern.
