Maryland Sportsbooks Report Revenue Exceeding $50 Million in May

In May, pro basketball betting dominated the total bets by sport in Maryland, leading to a statewide betting activity of $431.5 million. Despite being a decline from the previous months, the tax contributions nearly reached all-time highs. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported that all sports betting activities in the state generated $6.9 million for the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, supporting public education programs.

Online sports betting contributed the bulk of this amount, with $6.86 million generated for the Future Fund. Overall, May’s wagering activities in Maryland showed a 34.8% increase from the previous year. Year-to-date figures also reflected significant growth, with $54.6 million contributions to the Future Fund from $4.99 billion in total wagering activity, marking a 143.4% year-over-year increase.

Despite the substantial tax contributions, Maryland sportsbooks experienced their lowest metrics in 2024. January stood out as a particularly strong month with record-breaking revenues, but May saw lower numbers. Pro basketball and baseball were the top sports for betting activity in May, with FanDuel dominating online sports betting in Maryland.

FanDuel and DraftKings were the top-performing sportsbooks in May, with FanDuel generating $195.2 million in bets and DraftKings taking in $137.4 million. Other online sports betting sites in Maryland, such as BetMGM and Caesars, were significantly behind in terms of handle. Retail sports betting also contributed to the total handle, with $12 million, but yielded lower revenue compared to online sports betting. The tax contributions from retail sports betting were also relatively lower at $131,294.
