Betr was granted a Maryland online sports betting license by the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission, allowing it to officially launch in the state. Founded by Jake Paul and Joey Levy, Betr is already operational in Ohio and Virginia and will soon enter the Maryland market alongside other competitors. Betr’s launch date in Maryland has not been announced yet, but it will be the 13th online sportsbook in the state.
Betfred, on the other hand, will exit Maryland’s sports betting market by the end of July after failing to meet its projected market share. In addition to Betr, Veterans Services Corporation (VSC) and Bally Bet are also planning to launch their online sportsbooks in Maryland in July. Currently, FanDuel and DraftKings hold the top spots in Maryland with mobile handle numbers exceeding $135 million.
SWARC Chairman Thomas Brandt commented on the evolving industry and the competition in the Maryland market, noting the presence of big players like FanDuel and DraftKings alongside new entrants like Betr. With a total of 13 online sportsbooks expected to be operating in Maryland by the end of July, Betr will face significant competition in the Free State market. The app is required to undergo a controlled demonstration with the Maryland Lottery before fully launching in the state.
