The state of Maryland has officially acquired ownership of Baltimore’s Pimlico Race Course with plans to redevelop the venue. The Stronach Group handed over ownership to the state on Monday, marking the beginning of demolition to transform Pimlico into a year-round site for thoroughbred racing. All racing, training, and wagering operations at the home of the Preakness Stakes will cease on Sept. 1, with site work and demolition expected to begin this fall.
The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is scheduled to take place at Pimlico Race Course on May 17, 2025, after which the race will move to Laurel in 2026. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore signed a measure in May to rebuild the historic but outdated race course and transfer control to the state. The new law allows Maryland to utilize $400 million in state bonds for the reconstruction of the venue, including the addition of a training center and eventual closure of Laurel Park to shift racing operations to Pimlico.
The redevelopment plan for Pimlico Race Course involves renovating the track surface and grandstand, constructing additional stalls and a new training track, and reviving the surrounding Park Heights neighborhood. The state aims to modernize Pimlico and ensure its viability as a premier location for thoroughbred racing. The transfer of ownership from the Stronach Group to the state marks a significant step towards revitalizing this historic racing venue in Baltimore.
