Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s board has approved a $50.3 million emergency contract with Swedish construction company Skanska USA Civil Southeast Inc. for debris removal following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. While the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers handled debris removal in the federal channel, Skanska was chosen for its prior experience in bridge demolition. However, concerns were raised at a recent Board of Public Works meeting about the no-bid contract and lack of competition in the procurement process.
Despite the controversy, Maryland Transportation Authority’s executive director defended the decision, citing the urgency of the situation and the need for a company already working in the state. Governor Moore emphasized the importance of rebuilding the bridge for the state and national economy, with an estimated cost of $1.7 billion to $1.9 billion for a new span by 2028.
The collapse of the bridge was due to the cargo ship Dali losing power and crashing into a supporting column, resulting in the loss of six lives. President Biden’s administration has pledged a 100% federal cost share for the rebuild, and Governor Moore is working to ensure bipartisan support for the project.
This funding and approval of the emergency contract mark significant steps in the reconstruction efforts, as Maryland aims to restore a vital transportation artery and prevent future tragedies.
