Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced that the SUN Bucks program will be available this summer to help students who may experience hunger during the summer months. The program, funded by the USDA, will provide an additional $40 a month in June, July, and August to each child in households that receive SNAP benefits. This extra funding can be used at authorized grocery stores, retailers, and farmer’s markets to help families purchase food items they need.
The program is aimed at providing flexibility to families and ensuring that children do not go hungry during the summer break. Families receiving SNAP or TANF benefits automatically qualify for the SUN Bucks program, while families of students attending schools that offer free meals to all students may need to submit an application to determine eligibility. The program is also available to eligible families in the District of Columbia and across Virginia.
The SUN Bucks program is part of the effort by Maryland Hunger Solutions, a nonprofit organization working to eradicate hunger in the state, and the Maryland Department of Human Services to ensure that families have access to the food they need. The $60 million federally funded program will help keep food on family tables and provide support to those in need during the summer months.
