Terry Hasseltine of Maryland Sports Reveals Exciting Upcoming Events in the State

The Maryland Sports Commission executive director Terry Hasseltine recently discussed the cancellation of the 2024 Maryland Cycling Classic, the evolution of the Maryland 5 Star event, and upcoming sports events in the area with PressBox.

Hasseltine cited various factors for canceling the 2024 Maryland Cycling Classic, including the recent international incident at the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the scheduling conflicts due to the Olympics, and the challenge of getting top riders to participate. Despite the cancellation, he expressed confidence that the race will return in 2025 with a more dynamic and robust event.

The Maryland 5 Star event in Cecil County has evolved over the years, with increased marketing efforts, special activities on the grounds, and growing attendance. Hasseltine emphasized the uniqueness of the event as one of only seven in the world and encouraged sports enthusiasts to attend and witness world-class athletes in action.

On the upcoming men’s basketball doubleheader at CFG Bank Arena, featuring top college teams, Hasseltine discussed the opportunity to bring big-time college basketball to Baltimore and the positive reception from the community. He also highlighted the partnership with the Premier Lacrosse League’s Maryland Whipsnakes, focusing on building support for the team across the state while expanding lacrosse outreach.

Overall, the Maryland Sports Commission is focused on delivering exciting sports events and experiences for the community, with plans to continue hosting major tournaments and collaborating with sports organizations to promote Maryland as a premier sports destination.
