Six community-based and local government organizations in Maryland are set to receive a total of $1.2 million over the next two years through a federal grant program supported by the Inflation Reduction Act. The Maryland Forest Service received 22 applications for the Community Forestry Catalyst Fund, aiming to expand tree and forest-based initiatives in underserved communities. The selected organizations will receive funding, technical support, and the opportunity to collaborate with other experts.
The grants will support a variety of initiatives, with a focus on building the capacity of local organizations for long-term impact. Emphasis is placed on enhancing tree canopy and combating climate change through tree planting and maintenance efforts. The funding, provided through the USDA Forest Service, must be utilized by 2028, while additional financial assistance from Maryland’s 5 Million Trees initiative extends through at least 2031.
The application window for the next grant cohort is open from July 1 to September 1, 2024. Interested applicants can find more information on the Maryland Forest Service’s grant webpage or by contacting the organization directly. The aim of these grants is to ensure that Maryland communities have the support and resources to manage and steward their forest resources beyond the current funding period.
