The issue of immigration and cooperation with federal agents at the southern border of the United States is becoming increasingly important in Maryland, particularly in the midst of the U.S. Senate race. Currently, there is a mix of policies in different jurisdictions in Maryland when it comes to honoring ICE detainers for individuals with violent criminal pasts who may have entered the country unlawfully.
Some jurisdictions, like Baltimore County, have recently reached a compromise with ICE to provide notice before releasing individuals who may have immigration detainers. However, Governor Wes Moore, a Democrat, has not commented on whether there should be a statewide policy for handling ICE detainers. On the other hand, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Larry Hogan has been critical of jurisdictions, like Prince George’s County, that have sanctuary city status and do not cooperate with ICE.
During a recent campaign event, Hogan expressed his concerns about the patchwork of policies in place in Maryland and criticized officials who do not follow federal law or cooperate with federal law enforcement. His opponent, Angela Alsobrooks, a Democrat and the Prince George’s County executive, believes in jailing violent criminals but also supports bipartisan reforms to address immigration and border policies. As the U.S. Senate race in Maryland continues to heat up, the issue of immigration and cooperation with federal agents is likely to remain a central focus.
